The Best Way To Store Your Golf Cart in the Summer

Apr. 14 2023 How-To By Ben Nelson Golf and Outdoor Equipment

Taking your golf cart out for a drive on a relaxing spring day is a great feeling. However, some people may not want to drive around during the hotter months and instead choose to put their carts into storage. No matter where you house it, here are some things to know about the best way to store your golf cart in the summer and how to ensure it’s still in good shape when you bring it out in the fall.

Clean Your Cart

It’s always a good idea to clean your cart anytime you plan on putting it into storage for an extended period. Carts often pick up a lot of dust while in storage and may get covered in dirt or other grime if stored in a more open area. Taking a few hours to thoroughly clean your golf cart before putting it into storage will make it that much more ready to go when you bring it out.

Prepare the Battery

The best way to store your golf cart in the summer may depend on what type of cart you have. Many modern carts contain lithium batteries that you can easily remove and put on a separate charger. Fortunately, many chargers have fail-safes that prevent overcharging the battery.

However, if you have an older lead-acid battery, take preventative care and ensure you fully charge it before storing it. Make sure that you set the battery's water level and take the time to periodically top it off or ensure that someone can do so for you. Taking good care of the battery allows you to prevent sulfation and keep it in good shape come autumn.

Turn Off Electronics

If your golf cart has any electronic connections, it may be a good idea to turn them off before putting your cart into storage. For example, if your golf cart has a tow/run switch, we recommend switching it to tow before putting it in storage. Even when your cart is off, the battery will draw power from the speed controller in run mode. Turning it off ensures that your cart doesn't needlessly use power while not in use.
